The first Icelandic woman to swim the English Channel has been awarded “the most meritorious swim of the year” by the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation (CSPF).

Sigrún Þuríður Geirsdóttir was honoured for her feat, which she achieved last August. Vísir reports that the award is dedicated to Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the Channel some 90 years ago.

Sigrún managed to cross the Channel in just 22 hours and 34 minutes. Although she was the first Icelandic woman to take the swim alone, a team of five Icelandic women crossed the Channel in 2014.

Her achievement also got her nominated for Vísir and Bylgjan’s Man of the Year Awards last December.

Sigrún reportedly had a delightful time at the CSPF awards, sharing her good fortune on Facebook:

Fór á árlegan hátíðarkvöldverð hjá The Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation með Hörpu, Hödda og Jóa mínum. Hitti þar…
